The carbon fiber metro train "CETROVO 1.0 Carbon Star Express" made its debut on the Qingdao Metro, showcasing its unique advantages. Inside the carriages, black carbon fiber seats, handrails, and control consoles exude a technological ambiance, while more innovative technologies are hidden on the exterior.
Liu Jinzhu, a designer from CRRC Sifang Co., Ltd., explained that the train's body, frame of the bogie, and other main load-bearing structures are made of carbon fiber composite materials, marking the first commercial application of such materials in the primary load-bearing structures of metro vehicles. Compared to traditional metro trains, the carbon fiber metro train is lighter and more energy-efficient, reducing weight by approximately 11% and operational energy consumption by 7%, which translates to an annual reduction of about 130 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
The train's ride comfort has significantly improved, thanks to the vibration damping and isolation effects of carbon fiber materials and the active radial bogie technology. Interior noise has been reduced by 2 decibels, and curve-passing noise has decreased by 15 decibels. Additionally, the carbon fiber body offers higher strength, better impact resistance, and a longer structural lifespan. The lighter body also reduces axle weight, decreases wheel-rail wear, and lowers maintenance costs by 22%.
After years of research and testing, the "CETROVO 1.0 Carbon Star Express" officially began operation on Line 1 of the Qingdao Metro on January 10, 2025. Line 1, a backbone route of Qingdao's urban rail transit system, spans 60 kilometers, connecting five districts and covering four major transportation hubs, making it a primary mode of public transportation for Qingdao residents. The introduction of the carbon fiber train not only enhances the riding experience but also demonstrates Qingdao Metro's achievements in green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.
The train's exterior features a predominantly charcoal black color, with a U-shaped light strip on the front and blue and yellow lines along the body reflecting the coastal city's characteristics. Inside the carriages, the floor's color jumps and the large circular lighting design make the space appear more spacious and bright. The active radial system further reduces travel noise and improves ride comfort.
